Privacy Policy

This page is maintained by the Open Letters (Fremantle) team to answer common privacy questions about the site. It describes what we collect, why we collect it, and your rights under Australian law.

1. What We Collect and Why
×

To run this platform effectively and comply with Australian electoral laws, we collect:

  • Your name and suburb. We display these alongside your letter to ensure public accountability and to show MPs that the letter comes from a real constituent.
  • Your email address. We use this to verify your account, send you updates on your letter’s status, or contact you if our moderation team has questions. Your email address is never published openly on the website.
  • Your political opinions and experiences. The letters you write reflect your views. By submitting a letter, you consent to us hosting this information publicly as part of our online catalogue.
2. How Your Data is Shared
×

Our platform is an open catalogue designed for public transparency:

  • Public display. Anyone visiting the website can read your letter, your name/initial and your postcode.
  • Delivery to MPs. If a letter is shared or discussed with an MP, we would include your name and suburb so they know who the feedback is coming from. We do not share your private contact details with the MP unless you explicitly request to include them in the body text of your letter.
  • No commercial sharing. We will never sell, rent, or trade your personal data to third parties, corporate lobbyists, or marketing companies.
3. Data Security and Retention
×

We take reasonable, industry-standard steps to protect your personal information from unauthorised access, loss, or misuse. If you ever decide you want to step back from the platform, you can contact us to request the removal of your email address from our database and the deletion or archiving of your letters.

4. Your Rights Under Australian Law
×

We operate in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). You have the right to access the personal information we hold about you, request corrections to it, or make a complaint if you feel your privacy has been mishandled.

To make a privacy request or ask us a question about your data, email inbox@openlettersfreo.com.
